Achilles Tendon Surgery

The surgery involves releasing the complete Achilles tendon off of your heel, cleaning out all the diseased tendon and scar tissue, removing the bones spurs and/or Haglund's deformity and reattaching the Achilles tendon back onto your heel through the use of bone anchors.
The recovery from this surgery is very lengthy; however, the long term outcomes are very good.
Non-Insertional Achilles Tendinosis Surgery
The problem is not at the heel, but higher within the tendon. This surgery involves opening up the Achilles tendon and removing any disease and scarred portions of the tendon. If much of the tendon needs to be removed, a tendon transfer/augmentation may be needed.
As a general rule, Achilles Tendon procedures are performed on an out-patient basis in an Alberta Health Services (AHS) approved Surgical Center or in a Hospital. Surgical procedural costs are covered by AHS or the patient may opt for private surgery to avoid a waiting time.
