Bunion Surgery
At Feldman & Leavitt Foot And Ankle we may discuss and recommend surgical treatment. There are literally dozens of surgical procedures which have been developed over the past 150 years to treat the bunion deformity. Appropriate surgical treatment of a bunion is based on proper evaluation and discussion to see what meets the needs of the patient. Procedures that suit a 16 year OLD are often not appropriate for an elderly person and vice versa. Careful tailoring of the surgical procedure and after care will be thoroughly discussed with each patient and each team member at Feldman & Leavitt Foot and Ankle.
As a general rule, surgical bunion procedures are performed on an out-patient basis in an Alberta Health Services (AHS) approved Surgical Center or in a Hospital. Surgical procedural costs are covered by AHS or the patient may opt for private surgery to avoid a waiting time. A visit to Feldman Foot And Ankle Specialists will CLEARLY define all available patient options.
If nonsurgical treatments fail to relieve bunion pain and when the pain of a bunion interferes with daily activities, it is time to discuss surgical options with a foot and ankle surgeon. Together you can decide if surgery is best for you.
In selecting the procedure or combination of procedures for your particular case, the foot and ankle surgeon will take into consideration the extent of your deformity based on the x-ray findings, your age, your activity level and other factors. The length of the recovery period will vary, depending on the procedure or procedures performed.
