Ganglion Cyst Surgery
Ganglion Cyst Surgery is a removal is surgery to remove a ganglion cyst that has caused pain or numbness or made it hard to do your activities. A ganglion is a small sac, or cyst, filled with a clear fluid that is thick like jelly. The cyst may look like a bump on your hand or wrist.
Causes
Doctors don't know what exactly the causes of ganglion cyst that start growing. Some theories indicate that the cyst may develop after something injures a joint, allowing tissue to leak or bulge out.
Currently, the majority of experts concur that ganglion cysts occur from persistent micro-injury to mesenchymal cells near the synovial capsular junction. The supporting capsular and ligamentous structures seem to be stimulated to create hyaluronic acid by fibroblasts, which then builds up to produce the mucin "jelly-like" substance that is typically present in ganglion cysts.
What does a ganglion cyst look like?
Generally speaking, a ganglion cyst appears as a lump or bump on your wrist, finger, or foot. This mass may appear spherical or asymmetrical (more like an oval). A ganglion cyst starts when the fluid leaks out of a joint or tendon tunnel and forms a swelling beneath the skin. The cause of the leak is generally unknown, but may be due to trauma or underlying arthritis.
Surgery involves making a small incision to remove the ganglion cyst as well as part of its “root,” which is the part of the cyst that connects it to the joint or tendon sheath. Surgery is performed using regional anesthesia and does not require an overnight stay in the hospital.
As a general rule, Ganglion Cyst procedures are performed on an out-patient basis in an Alberta Health Services (AHS) approved Surgical Center or in a Hospital. Surgical procedural costs are covered by AHS or the patient may opt for private surgery to avoid a waiting time.
